Don't forget ... Fitting Days start today!

Fitting Days are the 14th, 15th and 16th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.

Please make sure your student is wearing clothing that is easy to take off and put on (ie. shorts & t-shirt) to facilitate a smooth process.  Freshmen will be fitted first, then seniors, juniors, sophomores.

All new students (choir, orchestra, band) must be fitted for concert wear!

(If your current student has changed sizes or needs to replace an item, this is the only time to do it.)

Marching Band students:  Bring $10 cash or check (made out to SCN) for your lyre.

For more information, see related article below.

It's time for the 4th Annual Friends of Music Parent/Family BBQ

When:   Thursday, August 23, 2012 @ 6:30 pm

                     Where: Auditorium Foyer

All Music Parents (Choir, Jazz, Orchestra and Band) are invited to the 4th Annual FOM Parent BBQ.  The BBQ will be held in the SCN Auditorium Foyer.  We will be serving pizza, refreshments and dessert.  Following dinner, our marching band, drum line and color guard will be practicing their half time performance on the driver's ed range until around 8:00 and then will move to the football field.  Stick around for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how the half time show is assembled!

This is a great opportunity for you to socialize and meet other music program parents and find out how you can get involved with Friends of Music, your booster club.  ALL MUSIC parents and families are invited to this event!

We invite all parents to ask questions of your Directors or Friends of Music Board Members; or submit written questions either at the BBQ or at fomcommunications@gmail.com and we will answer them on the website and in your monthly newsletter:  Polar Notes.

SCN Music Spirit Wear will be available for purchase throughout the evening so remember to bring your checkbooks!

If there is rain...well with this change of venue...No need to worry about the rain!

To help us with a dinner headcount, please RSVP to fomcommunications@gmail.com by August 22nd with Name, # of adults attending and # of children attending.  (Sorry, those students in band camp will not be able to participate in the BBQ since they will be at mandatory practice during this time, so please feed your band student before band camp).

If you’d like to help set up, serve, or donate a dessert for this event, please e-mail fomcommunications@gmail.com or contact us directly

Fitting Days 2012

Hello Freshman Parents and welcome to Marching Band Fitting and Concert Wear Fitting Days!!!

I know this is a lot of information in a very short time for you to absorb, so please feel free to ask questions by email to Cathy at cschwanebeck@sbcglobal.net or
Kim at
justintme1@hotmail.com and we will do our best to respond to you prior to the first night of Marching Band/Concert Wear fitting days.

The upcoming Marching Band and Concert Wear Fitting Days will be August 14 -16th from 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm and August 22nd from 6:30 to 9:00 pm.  (Fittings during Marching Band Camp will be August 14 - 16 AND August 21-23) During Band Camp we measure and fit all of the kids for their St Charles North Concert Wear (Boys and Girls) which includes Concert Dress for all music programs (Band, Choir, Orchestra) except Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz (Attire will be addressed later with directors).  The attire for concerts is as follows:

Girls -    Black North High School Concert gown (fit and purchase at fitting days)        $55.00
Black closed toe shoes (purchase on own)
              Black hose (purchase on own)

Boys -    Black Tux Pants (fit and purchase at fitting days)           $27.95
Black Tux Jacket (fit and purchase at fitting days)          $56.00

Marching Band Uniform fitting is also performed at this time. They will also be required to purchase:

Cap**    (Available in school store)            $10.00
Polo**  (Available in school store)             $20.00

**School store prices are based on last year's pricing, prices are subject to change.

We also have flip folders, single pages and lyres for sale from Quinlan and Fabish during fitting days for those who need these items for marching band.  Prices are usually less at this venue than purchasing by yourself at a local music store.

We do have a limited amount of gently used concert wear available and will sell these items as a considerable discount on a first come, first serve basis.  Checks for these items are made out separately to Friends of Music for these items.

I am also looking for volunteers to help on August 14, 15, 16 and August 22nd (if fitting day is needed) during band camp and would like to know if you are available to help one of or several of the days?  If you are not available can you send in snacks and food for the volunteers who will be coming over right after work and not have a chance to eat dinner?  Here is the list of areas where we need help:

Concert Wear
- helping with the sizing of Tux shirts, jackets, pants and girls dresses

Fittings & Sewing -
help w/uniform fitting.  Can you sew?  It's really just tacking a hem...WE REALLY NEED YOU here...

Rain Coats -
Help size, and number the rain coats

Hats -
Help size and number the hats.

Check-in -
handing out forms, having kids completely fill them out and keeping track of who has been through the area to be fitted.

Checkout/Data Entry
- taking care of who's been there, administrative work, spreadsheet work

Shoe Sizing -
new students need marching band shoes.  Students who have grown need to replace their marching band shoes.

Spirit Wear Table
- selling spirit wear for 2012/2013

Volunteer Table
- explain volunteer opportunity to parents and recruit new volunteers to help at Friends of Music events.

Volunteer Coordinator for games and parades -
This can be done from home.  Parents would e-mail you when they culd work, you would sigh them up and respond, keeping a master list of what time they are coming and if they signed up for something specific.  (This is not a difficult position and is done shortly after Concert Wear and Marching Band fitting days!)

Food Coordinator -
Would you like to help us coordinate food for all  of us?  Or, would you like to bring in something to share?  We are in need of someone to coordinate the food each day.  Yes, Friends of Music usually provides dinner one of the nights, but we'd like to have dinner for all 3 nights.

Marching Band and Concert Wear Fitting Days and Times:

Tuesday, 8/14          6-9pm (with volunteers arriving at 5:30ish)

Wed, 8/15               6-9pm (with volunteers arriving at 5:30ish)

Please respond to  Cathy at  cschwanebeck@sbcglobal.net with:

Italy Day 6

Back in Rome after a 4 hour drive from Florence this morning. We spent the entire afternoon in Vatican City, the world's smallest sovereign nation, seeing the Vatican Museum, the world's largest museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica.

After sharing our final dinner together (senza scallopini!) we traveled back to our hotel for some swimming and an impromptu concert on the pool deck. Everyone seems exhausted and wired at the same time as we wait for a 2:45am wakeup call for our 3:45 departure for the airport.

It has been an thoroughly amazing trip. The students were brilliant, the chaperones were wonderful, and we could to have asked for a better time. Stay tuned to this page for Mr. Morgan's reflections later in the week and in the meantime, see you tomorrow! Arrivaderci, Italia!!

Italy Day 5

So it turns out that singing in 700 year-old churches NEVER gets old! We spent the entire day in "The Cradle of Civilization" : Firenze. We started at Accademia Gallery which houses many of the sculptures by Michelangelo including the masterpiece David. Amazing to take in the design and execution of something of such beauty which was completed over 600 years ago!

From there, we went on an extensive walking tour of the city and got in some much needed shopping time! The we went on another extensive walk to collect our concert wear and go to our final performance at Santa Trinita which was completed in 1280!!! We sang for their evening mass and gave a concert afterward. The acoustics in the room we're unbelievable, of course, with pieces like Lux Aurumque and Virge Jesse Florit sounding like never before.

The evening finished off with another great Tuscan meal and some fun at a local teenage discotheque that opened exclusively for us thanks to our wonderful tour managers.

Tomorrow is our final day as we return to Rome for a tour of Vatican City and preparing for Friday's trip home. It's been a rich and rewarding experience, but everybody's looking forward to moving home.

Enjoy today's Flickr photos! Buona Notte.

Italy Day 4

What a country! The wonders of Italy never cease. We started our day driving to the town of Assisi, hometown of St. Francis. We sang inside the 700 year old Cathedral there, then walked clear across the beautiful walled city then sang at the Cathedral of St. Claire. From Assisi we drove to Lucca, the hometown of the great 19th century Italian Opera composer Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini. Another wonderful city with such rich history dating back over 2000 years. After a great guided walking tour, we finally got a little shopping time!! Then we drove to our overnight stop here in Montecatini, just outside Florence, where we will tour and perform tomorrow. Everyone is healthy, happy, and so appreciative of this amazing opportunity. Today's photos are up and we added a few more to yesterday's folder.
