Theory (AP)

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend

The SCN Music Department is pleased to offer AP Music Theory. Our mission in music theory is threefold:

  1. Learn standard practice techniques for composing and analyzing music typical of the 17th-20th centuries.
  2. Gain aural skills that enable students to analyze and transcribe melody, harmony and rhythm.
  3. Integrate the above skills and subsequently succeed on the AP Music Theory exam given in May.

Students interested in composing, arranging, or studying music in college should consider taking this course as a junior or senior.

Even if you are not considering majoring in music, a score of “3″ or higher on the AP exam (85% of 2005-2006 students scored a “3″ or higher at SCN) many colleges will apply this as a humanities credit towards general education requirements.  That means one less class to pay for in college!
