Instrumental Jazz

 SCN is pleased to offer instrumental jazz each day as a part of the curriculum. Students enrolled in a jazz class register for the course in place of lunch, and are given the last ten minutes of class in order to eat. Instumental Jazz is designed for the instrumental student interested in investigating the jazz genre. The following classes are available:

Jazz Band
This course is open to grade 9, 10, 11 & 12 students who are concurrently enrolled in a core choir, band or orchestra course. Jazz Band students will acquire the knowledge necessary for the study and performance of introductory jazz literature. Students are instructed and assessed in many areas of musicianship, including: improvisation, critical listening, and the many styles of jazz, America’s musical art form.

Jazz Ensemble
This course is available by audition to grade 10, 11 & 12 students who are concurrently enrolled in a core choir, band or orchestra course. Jazz Ensemble students will acquire the knowledge necessary for the study and performance of intermediate jazz literature. Students are instructed and assessed in many areas of musicianship, including: improvisation, critical listening, and the many styles of jazz, America’s musical art form.

Jazz Lab
This course is available by audition to grade 10, 11 & 12 students who are concurrently enrolled in a core choir, band or orchestra course. Jazz Lab students will acquire the knowledge necessary for the study and performance of advanced jazz literature. Students are instructed and assessed in many areas of musicianship, including: improvisation, critical listening, and the many styles of jazz, America’s musical art form.

Jazz Workshop
This course is available by audition to grade 10, 11 & 12 students who are concurrently enrolled in a core instrumental course. Jazz Workshop students will acquire the knowledge necessary for the study and performance of advanced jazz literature of the highest quality. This course covers advanced improvisation, critical listening, and the pursuit of the many styles within the jazz genre.
