The SCN Music Department offers several activities, both Co-Curricular and Extra Curricular. Here are two simple definitions:
Co-Curricular: A graded, after-school component of a class. Co-Curricular activities are required as part of the class. They are an extension of the classroom into the after-school hours. Work, family obligations, or Extra-Curricular activities do not take precedence over these graded commitments.
Extra-Curricular: Not associated with a class. Extra-Curricular activities are not required, but are open an available to all students, usually through an audition. Examples: Madrigals, Spring Musical.
The following is a brief overview of the SCN Music Department offerings. Further details can be found via the links at the bottom.
Concerts: Concerts are a co-curricular (graded) obligation of all performing classes. Ensembles usually give 4 or more concerts per year. Invited performances (i.e. Disney Honors, Jazz Festivals) are considered concert performances.
Marching Band: This is a co-curricular (graded) obligation for students enrolled in a concert band class (Concert Band, Symphonic, Wind Ensemble, etc.). So, concert band is marching band. Students who are fall varsity athletes can request an exemption from Marching Band, but all other students are required. Read the marching band FAQ here.
Parades: This is a co-curricular (graded) obligation for students enrolled in a concert band class (Concert Band, Symphonic, Wind Ensemble, etc.). It is different from marching band, which performs at football games. Parades are required for all band students, whether varsity athletes or not.
Madrigals: This is an extra curricular activity available to any student by audition. It is an extra-curricular activity that has become one of the highlights of the school year, taking place in December prior to the holidays. There are two singing ensembles, a recorder ensemble, a string, brass or woodwind ensemble that perform music from the Medieval and Renaissance historical periods. There are over sixty students who participate in this event. There are costumes, a catered meal and entertainment for each of the three performances and families look forward to the celebration of Yule season. This is open to all SCN students by audition.
Spring Musicial: This is an extra curricular activity available to any student by audition. The musical is an extra-curricular activity during the second semester. This involves acting, singing and dancing and provides students with an opportunity to perform major Broadway shows in an educational environment. It is always our goal to put on the best performance possible with the purpose of educating students in the craft of theatre. It is open to all SCN students and we sometimes audition younger students as needed.
Quintets, Combos: This is an extra curricular activity available to students by audition.
