SCN is pleased to offer six concert band classes that meet each day as part of the curricular offerings. These classes include:
Concert Band (2 sections)
This course is open to grade 9 students who participated in middle school band or with the permission of the instructor. Concert Band investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of introductory high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of this course.
Symphonic Band
This course is open to grade 10, 11 & 12 students who participated in Concert Band or with permission of the instructor. Symphonic Band investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of intermediate high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of this course.
Varsity Band
This course is open to grade 10, 11 & 12 students by audition. Varsity Band investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of medium-advanced high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of the course.
Wind Symphony
This course is open to grade 10, 11 & 12 students by audition. Wind Symphony investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of advanced high school band literature. Marching Band is a required component of the course.
Wind Ensemble
This course is open to grade 10, 11 & 12 students by audition. Wind Ensemble investigates musicianship through instrumental performance. Students are instructed in the following areas: tone production, technique, rhythm, and music theory. These concepts are essential in the ongoing study of advanced high school and collegiate band literature. Marching Band is a required component of the course.
These bands give several concerts each semester (see online calendar) Students who enroll in a concert band are eligible to take a jazz band class during their lunch (they eat at the end of the period)
Auditions for Varsity Band, Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble take place in February.
