Attention All Marching Band Students

To all students enrolled in marching band:

Students who are enrolled in one of the courses that include marching band as a requirement of the course (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Varsity Band, Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble) and who meet all the requirements of the exemption are eligible for an exemption from the Physical Education course requirement during the first semester.  Students who choose to use this exemption are placed in a full-period study hall in place of the PE class.  The PE class cannot be replaced with any other course.

Only students who attend all marching band practices prior to the start of school and who also attend the evening practices during the fall are eligible for this PE course exemption. 

Since the class schedules for students will be distributed during material pickup days (August 17-19) or at freshman orientation (August 20), all of which occurs prior to the conclusion of the before-school band practices, students’ schedules will not list the PE Band study hall in place of a PE class. 

Each student who attends the first evening band practice on August 18 will receive a PE exemption authorization form from a band director.  This form must be signed by the student and a parent and returned to a band director at practice on August 19 in order for the student to be considered for the PE exemption.  Students who submit the form on August 19 and who successfully complete the August practice requirement will be enrolled in the PE Band study hall in place of the first semester PE class.  This course enrollment change will occur at the end of the day on Friday, August 21.  These students will then receive a newly printed revised schedule after their performance at the school on Monday, August 24.  These new schedules will be distributed by the band directors.  Alternatively, students can pick up a new schedule in the front lobby between 6:40am and 7:20am on the first day of school by presenting a current-year school ID card.

The change from PE class to PE Band study hall will not require any other classes in a student’s schedule to be moved.  The PE Band study hall will meet in the same class period as the removed PE class.

Students and parents should not contact the guidance office regarding the PE Band exemption.  The counselors are not authorized to add the PE Band study hall in place of a PE class.
